The times when thinking about a mid-size premium saloon meant that you had to settle for thirsty engines and high taxes are long gone – just ask these guys!

Yes, the “modest” 2.0 TDI Ultra Audi A6 went through 14 different countries (Europe) without having to refuel. If that doesn’t merit a World Record, we don’t know what does. Oh, good thing Guinness agrees!

The A6, driven by Andrew Frankel and Rebecca Jackson, covered a mind-blowing 1,865 km (1,158.9 miles) during what was an almost non-stop 28-hour drive through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia.

The route was planned by the RAC and it went around congested areas and mountains as much as possible.

The Audi averaged a speed of around 80 km/h (50 mph) and returned 75.9 mpg UK (63.2 mpg US or 3.7 liters/100 km).

And believe it or not, that’s actually better than the 2.0 TDI Ultra‘s official 67 mpg UK (55.8 mpg US or 4.2 liters/100 km).

Overall, this is a terrific result for diesel-powered cars everywhere and it shows us that they’re not ready to go quietly into the night in favor of small capacity petrol units and of course, hybrids.
