Audi reckons their 2-litre diesel powered A6 Ultra model can sip 4.2 liters of fuel every 100 kilometers (67 MPG) and just to prove it, they’re attempting to beat a World Record.

In collaboration with Audi, driving-assistance company RAC wants to set a Guinness World Record for the greatest number of countries driven to on one tank of fuel.

The whole event was “masterminded” by RAC and the route covers at least 1600 Kilometers (1000 Miles) and many, many countries. In fact, Audi and RAC stated that the challenge is to drive through as many countries as possible before the car runs out of fuel.

According to Audi, a ferry or rail Channel crossings would invalidate the title attempt at the World Record. So, even though RAC is a UK based company the trip begun in the Netherlands, with motoring journalist Andrew Frankel and racing driver Rebecca Jackson taking turns in driving the A6 Ultra.

The two will drive almost continuously, following a carefully planned route to avoid congestion and mountain roads, through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, and Italy towards the Balkans.

As it goes with these things, Guinness stipulated that a standard car must be used in order for the record to be validated. That’s why, apart from the decals, the 2.0-litre 187 HP Audi A6 TDI Ultra isn’t modified in any way. In fact, the only things allowed to be altered during the trial are the speed (Duh) and tire pressure.

The team calculated that the optimum speed for maximum efficiency is 56 MPH. So, driving through the night – when the air is cooler – while maintaining a 56 MPH average speed on quieter roads is the best way to achieve the desired figure 67 MPG figure.
