It’s a known fact that the all-new Mazda MX-5 weighs roughly the same as the first-generation model. Considering the improvements in technology, the latest iteration of the Japanese roadster should demolish the original MX-5 on a track. But can it?

The following video has the answer to the question, as it features a track duel between the all-new model and the 1990 original.

The Mazda MX-5 MkI was driven by Jade Paveley, while the Owen Mildenhall drove the all-new MX-5 MkIV. The race took place on the Circuit De Calafat in Catalonia, Spain, over the course of one lap (3.25 km or 2.01 miles).

To make it as fair as possible, the 1990 MX-5 had a head start of five seconds. Were 25 years of technological progress enough for the new model to overtake the first-generation MX-5 before the end of the lap?
