Out of over 1 million new cars registered in the UK so far in 2015 (5.7 percent rise year-on-year), 11,842 are plug-ins of some sort. This means they’re around four times as popular as the same time frame of 2014.
According to information published in a report by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the exact figure is 417 percent compared to last year.
The best selling plug-in in the country is the Outlander PHEV (pictured) and this has helped Mitsubishi achieve a nearly double all-round sales figure year-on-year.
However, while this may sound like it holds promising prospects for the future, that won’t actually be the case. Mike Hawes, the chief executive of the SMMT says “the remarkable growth in demand for plug in vehicles is expected to continue as the range of ultra-low emission vehicles on sale increases. Meanwhile, we anticipate a natural levelling out of the overall new car market throughout the remainder of 2015.”
