Just after the first qualifying practice for the 24-hours of Le Mans, where Porsche’s LMP1 Hybrids took P1, P2 and P3, the German carmaker showcased three photos on its Facebook page, one of which included a mystery model.
As we stated in a previous article, every 919 Hybrid represents something through its livery, thus having a quite fascinating backstory. The red 919 honors Porsche’s past and heritage, that’s why it was photographed alongside the 917k that won the race 45 years ago and spawned the beginning of Porsche’s 17 wins.
The black 919 honors Porsche’s present and current achievements, that’s why it was photographed alongside the 918 supercar that managed to beat the Nurburgring track-record. And the last 919 honors Porsche’s return to Le Mans and what might the future hold, that’s why it was photographed alongside a covered car with the writing “Mission: Future Sportscar”.
But wait, is that a real teaser or the photograph is made for the sake of promoting Porsche’s past-present-future theme?
The covered car may suggest the “nobody knows what the future holds” motif, or it could very well indicate that the German car manufacturer is cooking something delicious. It can be anything, and that is what makes this photo so brilliant – it leaves it to the viewer to decide.
A rumor, at some point, stated that Porsche was considering a turbocharged, 600 HP, mid-engine V8 supercar to fill the gap between the hardest 911 and the 918, while keeping an eye on the Ferrari 488 GTB and McLaren 650S.
In fact, the rumor still stands as Porsche now posted the image with the covered vehicle. The shape under the canopy does resemble the 918’s flared format, but judging by the frog-eye, low hood guise, maybe the front fascia is inspired by the 911.
