Yes, it’s a big claim, but the car really does sound that good. The Mercedes C11 was a prototype class Le Mans racing car created in 1990 which used a 5-liter V8 twi-turbocharged to produce from 730 hp to as much as 950 hp.
It weighed just 904 kg or 1,995 lbs and it had a top speed of 253 mph, although being a racing car it could have been adjusted through gearing.
The car was successfully run by the Sauber-Mercedes and among the notable drivers that got behind the wheel we mention Michael Schumacher and Karl Wendlinger.
It was recently spotted out on the track by NM2255 and the footage he captured is posted below. It features the car stationary in the pits being started up, then it goes out and, as the title of this article suggests, a very pleasurable V8 rumble.
You know fitting turbochargers takes away much of an exhaust sound’s rasp, but it seems that the open exhaust this C11 has negates that. The engine would sound ‘purer’ without the turbos, but even with them it’s one of the best turbo V8s you’ll probably ever get to hear.
