After an inconsistent start to the season, the Swiss team is currently 5th in the Constructors Standings, a position they don’t expect to be able to hold for much longer.

Team principal Monisha Kaltenborn said that “holding on to fifth place will be difficult. We know other teams will do more – but we have to go our own way.”

Waiting for big upgrades isn’t that much of a risk at the moment with McLaren and Force India struggling, which means that even if Sauber drops from 5th, they probably won’t fall behind by too many points – especially with such talented drivers as Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson and an above average power unit on their side.

Kaltenborn also said that the upgrade isn’t a “B-spec car but a big update package,” and that it will come “after the break when we reach the levels we want to reach on that package. We will not introduce it until we can make it work, and the way things are looking, it’s going to be after the break.”

Felipe Nasr echoed his team boss‘s comments while also saying that the upgrades will be aerodynamic in nature, looking to “bring more downforce”.

Until that moment comes, the only teams that look to be in good shape to pass Sauber are Lotus and Toro Rosso.

If McLaren does somehow make the jump, scoring points in each of the next couple of races, we’re pretty sure that Sauber will be just as surprised as we would be.
