So much for Skoda’s efforts to craft a special niche for itself in the MPV segment with the first Roomster, as the second generation of the model will be relegated to a rebadged VW Caddy.
The reason for this is that Skoda is following the trend and moving away from MPVs to concentrate on SUVs, but instead of axing the series, the bosses over at the VW Group decided to continue offering the model under a more economically viable form by rebadging the fourth-generation VW Caddy into the new Roomster.
From our scoop shots, we see that the more utilitarian, but probably roomier…Roomster Mk2, will put a Skoda face, complete with the brand’s waterfall grille, on the Caddy, and get bespoke exterior trimmings and tail lamps. Expect similar changes inside with Skoda badges and instrument dials.
The engine range will be similar to the Caddy that gets an assortment of 2.0-liter diesels ranging from 75PS to 150PS, along with 1.0-liter, 1.2-liter and 1.4-liter petrol units with up to 125P, paired to both manual and dual-clutch transmissions.
It’s not yet known if the Roomster will follow the Caddy’s example of offering two different wheelbase lengths.
