Cars that were owned by celebrities have the tendency to become notoriously expensive and we think this 1976 Porsche 911 Turbo is no exception.
That’s because it was the property of legendary actor and petrol-head idol Steve McQueen. It was the actor’s very last special order from Porsche and it’s as cool as it gets.
We always associated McQueen with fast, dangerous cars, taking in account that he portrayed “shoot first, ask questions later” personas and racing drivers in his movies. The getaway, Bullit and Le Mans are just some examples of his pure awesomeness. The guy owned the Porsche 917, Porsche 908 and Ferrari 512 racecars that appeared in the Le Mans film, for crying out loud. Did we mention he was a licensed pilot?
So, it comes as no surprise seeing that a 930 Widowmaker was his choice of 70’s Porsche. The top of the range supercar killer, ordered in Slate Gray – even the color sounds cool – is a rare, early production example with a 3.0-litre non-intercooled turbo engine. You see? Even if it’s 26 HP down from the 3.3-litre 386 HP air-to-air intercooled Porsche 930, the old girl still sets a high standard for awesomeness.
Oh, and McQueen added a dashboard switch to the Porsche that kills the rear lights in case he was being chased on Mulholland Drive. Chased by police, in case you were wondering.
The car will be auctioned by Mecum, in August and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to benefit ‘The Boys Republic’, a non-profit treatment community for troubled youngsters in Chino Hills, California
