The Volvo V40 is one of the safest, best looking and most practical cars in its segment, which is why we’re really looking forward to seeing the facelifted version.

The premium C-segment is no child’s play. It’s dominated obviously by the German trio from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi, with Volvo doing its best to bother them in terms of appeal.

Ask anybody who’s ever driven the V40 and they’ll probably tell you that it’s a great car. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to say that the 1 Series, A-Class or the A3 are clearly superior in any way to their Swedish rival.

Sure, the Germans have a more capable engine range when it comes to the sportiest versions. The best the V40 can do is a 254 PS T5 Geartronic model, which isn’t even as fast as a BMW 125i, let alone the M135i – not to mention the hottest of premium hot hatches, the RS3 and the A45 AMG.

Even so, the V40 is still a genuinely premium product, with eco-friendly power units and great looks. These renderings show the facelifted model and we think that they couldn’t be more accurate, especially when it comes to the front fascia.

You’ve got the new LED headlights, XC90-style, a new grille and a new spoiler. At the back, the taillights retain their original shape, yet are also LED-powered.

We can’t know for sure if Volvo won’t do anything more drastic when the real thing comes out, but until then, we’re pretty happy with this.
