We’ve been dreaming of a moment like this ever since Marty McFly captured the imagination of kids worldwide by riding hoverboards in the Back to the Future movies.

Apparently, hoverboards have become a reality, with Lexus being the latest company to claim it built one. The Lexus Hoverboard is the fourth project of the brand’s Amazing in Motion campaign and has been designed in collaboration with experts in super-conductive technology.

Described as “most advanced Hoverboard the world has seen,” Lexus’ contraption uses magnetic levitation with liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets to obtain a frictionless movement “of a kind that had been thought impossible.” The Hoverboard prototype is being tested in Barcelona in the coming weeks prior to the launch of the Amazing in Motion campaign this summer, when Lexus will showcase its capabilities.

Interestingly, the Hoverboard shares design cues with current Lexus vehicles – the brand’s signature spindle grille is featured at both ends. The “vehicle” is also made of high-tech and natural materials, similar to those used in Lexus cars, such as bamboo.

“At Lexus we constantly challenge ourselves and our partners to push the boundaries of what is possible. That determination, combined with our passion and expertise for design and innovation, is what led us to take on the Hoverboard project. It’s the perfect example of the amazing things that can be achieved when you combine technology, design and imagination,” said Mark Templin, Executive Vice President, Lexus International.

Now for some bad news: Lexus says the Hoverboard is a prototype and will not be for sale. Here’s hoping that’s not an irrevocable decision.
