When all is said and done, do you want your new-generation Audi A5 looking as A4-ish as possible, or totally different?

Let’s take a little trip down memory lane for this one. ‘Tis the year 2007, and out comes the brand spanking new Audi A5 Coupe. Everybody went nuts for it because of its looks, its interior, its performance – I remember driving the first A5 3.0 V6 TDI Quattro that Audi brought over here, and taking it on a long cruise (comparison test) next to a BMW 330xd Coupe.

The Audi won that test.

Shortly after, Audi brought over the all-new A4 as well (back then it was the B8) and everything changed for this segment. That car was more modern, more spacious and arguably better looking than all of its rivals, literally. We conducted a comparison test with a grand total of 6 other models (3 Series, C-Class, IS, X-Type, BLS, 9-3) and concluded that thanks to its size, superior comfort level and looks, it deserved to edge out the 3 Series and win our test.

However, and this is important, back then both the A5 as well as the A4 were shockingly good looking. We weren’t exactly expecting them to impress us that much. The A4 B8 was such a departure from the B7, it was pretty staggering.

Now, as you probably now, the all-new Audi A4 isn’t exactly blowing anybody away with its looks, so it’s safe to say that the A5 probably won’t shock you either.

But how similar will the two cars be? Will the A5 simply be a Coupe version of the B9 A4? Well, no, not exactly. Remember, the A5 had completely different headlights, a slightly different grille, a more muscular hood with design lines going down all the way to the bottom of the front spoiler…and these are things that the A4 didn’t have.

So even though we rather like this particular rendering, the fact that it’s 100% the new A4’s front end makes it implausible. You’re much more likely to see the new A5 looking more like this rendering from Josh, which is pretty interesting – especially because it has that wide ‘Prologue-like’ grille.
