The problem of engines burning oil is generally attributed to age and/or wear in the seals and it seeping into the compartments where fuel explodes, but why are some new car owners reporting it?
Consumer Reports says it’s not acceptable for new cars to use oil and to require a top up with regular service.
CR says that automakers’ recommendations to top up oil are misleading and we shouldn’t take that information lightly. They analyzed nearly 500,000 cars built between 2010 and 2014 and found which engines had the heaviest oil binge problems.
The main culprits seem to be Audi TDI engines, but BMW’s new 4.4-liter turbo V8 and older 4.8-liter V8 are also mentioned. Their findings are slightly shocking when they say stuff like “owners of BMW 5 Series vehicles with V8 engines were 27 times as likely to suffer excessive oil consumption as owners of an average vehicle.”
The infographics posted below are quite revealing, but we’d like to know is what you think too – what’s your take on this?
