When a two time F1 world champion is saying that racing has become too “predictable” and “boring” for the fans, he also probably means those things from a driver’s perspective.
The Spaniard was recently quoted saying that he’d like “faster cars, because now we are a little bit too close to GP2 times; probably more testing or little bit freer rules in terms of developing the car, because right now as you put the car into the first winter test more or less you keep that position until the end of the year.”
We can’t help but agree with Fernando, since we as fans would also love to see faster cars. As for the GP2 comparison, it’s actually a very relevant/sad one.
Last year alone, GP2 cars were about half a second down on F1 cars’ lap times. Back then it was Force India’s Sergio Perez complaining that his fastest practice time in the Spanish Grand Prix was just .500 sec quicker than the fastest time set in GP2 practice.
This wasn’t a problem a few years ago, when F1 cars were considerably faster than GP2 racers, and sounded about a billion times better. Now, it’s just like Fernando says, we need to do something to help Formula 1 bounce back as the clear cut king of motorsports.
The McLaren-Honda driver also added that the lack of engine or aero development makes the races “very predictable and very boring for the people at home,” which is more than evident by the fact that we can now easily anticipate what’s going to happen during the course of a grand prix.
The only thing that can shuffle the grid a little bit is a bad start from one or two main drivers – like how both Mercedes drivers got off to poor starts during last week’s British GP.
