When a high-powered mean racing machine gets out of control, you might want to be as far away as possible from it. Or at least behind something safe.
The protection of spectators and marshals around a racing facility is crucial, and that’s where a debris catch fence comes into play. Granted, a fence right next to the racing track might obscure the vision, but at least it keeps you safe from harm.
Take for instance the Geobrugg fence system. Its high-tensile steel wire, with a tensile strength of 1,770 N/mm2, is designed to withstand a substantial load. Any element that is accidentally thrown from the track towards the stands, is bound to get caught up in it – even a… car.
Mind you, the 400 Daytona NASCAR crash was a horrific sight, but this Ferrari 458 crashing into the fence at over 240 Km/h (150 Mph) at Road America is equally gruesome.
Fortunately, the driver survived the crash and walked away with minor injuries. This is why safety measures are very important, because otherwise this could have easily turned into a tragedy.
Thankfully the fence did its job and protected both driver and spectators from a horrendous outcome. In fact, the only thing tougher than the protective barrier and the ballistic Ferrari, was the camera mounted on it. What’s it made of?
