Jaguar’s R&D chief, Wolfgang Epple, is adamant that Jaguar shouldn’t follow the pack and go down the same autonomous driving road that everybody else is on.
He wants to assure future prospective Jaguar buyers that they will always be able to take control of their car whenever they please, even if said car will be jam-packed full of self-driving and crash avoidance tech.
Epple said “we don’t consider customers cargo. We don’t want to build a robot that delivers the cargo from A to B.” Autonews Europe quotes him, in regards to human driving being outlawed in the future, saying that “I don’t believe it will be forbidden. The reason is that lawmakers are human beings.”
Jaguar is still for using active systems to mitigate or avoid crashes, and we’re promised that with their cars, even in the future, the driver will always have the option to take full control whenever he/she pleases. This seems to be company policy and all we can say is ‘we approve.’ They can diversify the kinds of systems they use to improve safety along with comfort, like the pothole detection system in the video below.
