New information suggest that Nissan is looking to expand its EV line-up and maybe implement a crossover type vehicle.
We’ve known for some time now that Nissan has big plans for its star-EV. The next-gen Leaf is expected to deliver two-times the autonomy the ongoing car offers and a modern cool angular look – the current one seems a little dull, don’t you think?
But, according to Autocar, it turns out that Nissan has way bigger plans with the Leaf, as the Japanese car maker is looking to expand the sub-brand instead of concentrating on a single model, as Trevor Mann, Nissan executive vice-president stated:
“There could be more than one Leaf; we’ve always said it needn’t be one car. We’ve got the NV200 electric, too, now, but obviously we’re still studying other opportunities. What we’ve got to do is to make sure the market is right. We want to make sure that when we do the next one or we expand the line-up, we’re really taking the market intelligence that we’re gathering and using it. With our customer base, we have an enormous amount of feedback that we can recycle into what we do in the future.”
The Leaf is currently offered only in a 5-door hatchback variant, but the future can hold a plethora of different body styles, including an estate, or a crossover/SUV.
For now, we don’t know how many “Leaves” will grow on Nissan’s future sub-branch, but a bespoke platform is believed to house the future models. Until then, EV fans will need to settle for the upcoming, range extended regular Leaf.
