It appears that Aston Martin and Red Bull are negotiating more than a Formula 1 deal. It’s no secret that the energy drink giant wants to develop a road car, and Aston Martin is reportedly giving it a hand.

According to a report from Autocar, designer Adrian Newey is working with Aston Martin to design a track-only hypercar like the Ferrari FXX K and McLaren P1 GTR.

Apparently, the agreement is part of a partnership between Aston Martin and Red Bull Technologies, but this doesn’t automatically mean the F1 deal will go through, as Red Bull Technologies and Red Bull Racing are separate entities.

While Aston Martin declined to comment on the report, Red Bull Racing advisor Helmut Marko hinted that such a deal is currently being discussed. When he was asked about Red Bull joining forces with Aston Martin in Formula 1, he said that there are talks with Aston Martin, but on other projects.

At the beginning of this year, Adrian Newey has reduced his involvement in F1 to focus on a road car project. That’s when talks with Aston Martin reportedly began. According to insiders, Newey has worked with Aston Martin’s design team, which may suggest that the project is well under way.

Not much else is known, but what is certain is that Newey aims to build the ultimate vehicle of its kind. While some sources talk about a track-only hypercar, others say Newey would like to make it road legal. Red Bull wants to bring the car to market in 2018, and given the partnership between Aston Martin and Daimler, Red Bull’s hypercar could feature an engine and electronics from Mercedes-Benz.
