Have you ever wondered how all those heavily disguised prototypes came to be?
It all starts in a 3D CAD program where engineers design additional parts to cover up the original car. The extra components are required to fit perfectly on the automobile, as mounting and un-mounting them should be efficient and less time consuming.
The next thing is installing these sheets on the vehicle itself. It seems that using a screw gun does the trick, although the holes will probably be visible when the camouflage will be removed. But nobody cares about that, since these kind of test mules are driven to within an inch of their lives.
The parts appear to be made from a soft and light plastic ABS, which won’t affect the basic performance of the car. Ok, maybe only the aerodynamics.
The interior does not escape the covering treatment, as a protective housing is added to hide all the interesting things away, letting only the basic functions barely visible.
So there you go; a quick and easy way to improve the looks of a 5 Series GT.
