Airbags are fairly straightforward in the way they operate, as it’s all in the name, except for the fact that the gas filling the bag is not air but an inert gas created by burning a solid fuel. And the explosion that sets the airbag off is really rather powerful, as the Slow Mo Guys demonstrate below.
They not only try two airbags, but also two types of seatbelt pretensioner too. The first they check out is a spring-loaded one, but they fail to set it off and try another design that uses pyrotechnics.
The latter performs as designed and is filled with red paint for extra artistic effect when review at 2,500 frames per second. Check out the two videos below.
