Alfa Romeo has finished the preparation work on its -almost legendary now- upcoming SUV, whatever that means.

The plan is to launch the production of the Alfa Romeo SUV at the summer of 2016 according to a report coming from AutoNews. Sergio Marchionne, Fiat Chrysler CEO said to analysts during a conference call “Alfa’s plan is progressing as we told you it will go”.

Although he didn’t specify what type of vehicle the after-Giulia model will be, sources say that the Project 949, as it is code-named, is going to be a BMW X3-rivalling crossover based on the same, Giorgio platform used by the Giulia. This means that the two models will share most of their powertrains.

The same report says that Alfa’s new SUV will likely go on sale in Europe at late 2016 with the U.S. getting it a few months later.

Alfa Romeo is about to fully reveal the Giulia sedan range at the Frankfurt Motor Show after the initial debut of its range-topping twin turbo Quadrifoglio Verde version a few weeks ago. As for when we will see the Giulia in the showroom, Europe is expecting in February or March with the U.S. again welcoming it a few months later.
