After the new and well received XC90 SUV, Volvo is prepping a replacement for the aging S80 mid-size executive sedan, the new S90 that we spied here for the first time.
With the new S90 sedan that will be followed later on by a roomier and more versatile estate version named the V90 and its jacked-up crossover sibling, the V90 Cross Country that will replace today’s XC70, the Swedes will target the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes E-class among other executive models.
Built on Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform that’s currently employed on the XC90, the 90 series models are expected to be offered with the same set of powertrains with the SUV. These should include the 2.0-liter four-pot D4 and D5 diesels (likely outside North America), the 316hp 2.0-liter turbo gasoline T6 and the 407hp 2.0-liter turbo- and super-charged plug-in hybrid four T8 Twin-Engine.
Volvo officials have pledged that the new S90 will be a more premium car than the S80 offering more space and a higher level of quality and features, together with a heavy dose of Swedish style, both inside and out.
We’ll have to take Volvo’s word for the latter, as this first prototype was camouflaged like a tank, but if you’re pondering where they’ll get their inspiration from, look no further than to last year’s Estate Concept.
We could see the first teasers of the new S90 on the web later this year.
