Germany’s Continental is hard at work making self driving cars safe and reliable to use. There is a long way to go, but the prototypes shown already have advanced functions in operation.
For instance, the CECC (short for Connected Enhanced Cruise Control) relies not only on the data it gathers with sensors, but on satellite information as well. Continental says all the systems it encompasses work together in harmony to basically give the car ‘an understanding’ of its surroundings.
One challenge they have overcome that to me has always sounded like a treacherous thing to overcome is maintaining lane discipline when road markings are poor or nonexistent. Continental’s CECC ‘sees’ what the cars around it are doing and how they’re arranged and ‘understands’ where the lanes are.
The company says the main goals it has for this technology is to rid the public roads of fatal accidents, improving efficiency and comfort at the same time.
