As Honda proves with the BR-V Prototype, seven-seat crossovers are the next big thing in southeast Asian countries, which is why other automakers are going down this path too.
Daihatsu may be one of them, as the Japanese carmaker’s FT Concept unveiled at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show may signal its intentions to bring a seven-seat crossover to market.
Debuting alongside the smaller FX Concept, the FT Concept is a medium-sized seven-seat SUV study 4,350mm long, 1,750mm wide and 1,690mm high, with a 2,685mm wheelbase.
Daihatsu didn’t have much to say about the study, other than it features a “tough and sporty exterior and a futuristic dashboard,” as well as a “wide interior space that can comfortably accommodate seven passengers.”
Finished in a Warm Silver Metallic exterior paint, the FT Concept sports a flashy chrome grille that underlines the LED headlights and rides on turbine-shaped five-spoke 18-inch alloys shod with 225/55 tyres. The black plastic cladding serves to underline its rugged appearance, with other details including the hidden rear door handles and the LED taillights.
Inside, the Daihatsu FT Concept features a digital instrument cluster, push-start ignition, leather seats and polished metal accents on the dashboard, four-spoke steering wheel and center console.
Just like the FX Concept, the FT has a rear-wheel drive configuration, but is powered by a larger 1.5-liter engine with an unspecified output. Another similarity to the FX is that the FT looks quite ready to be built, which could mean it previews a seven-seat SUV for southeast Asian markets.
