Even though the XC90 is quite the hot item at the moment and Volvo isn’t likely to mess up a winning formula, this rendering of a coupe version really has us wondering.
It may not seem that way, but Volvo did take chances with innovative/weird designs before. In fact, the C30 is an excellent example. They sold the C30 from 2006 until 2013 and you can make the case that people did enjoy the looks of the car, especially since global sales numbers weren’t that bad.
Applying the same philosophy to the XC90 is a lot more risky, especially since the new model just came out. So even if we have a somewhat recent precedent of Volvo taking a chance on an unusual design, odds are they’re not going to come up with a Coupe version just so they can challenge the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe.
However, as a design exercise, while looking at this rendering I can’t help but feel that lots of people would be interested in this car. If you appreciate SACs (Sports Activity Coupes) in general, then you’d probably enjoy this version of the XC90 as well.
The problem is that real-life Volvo customers aren’t exactly the type that go and buy a BMW X6 – they much rather drive an X5 because it’s more practical. Therefore, you can expect Volvo to leave the XC90 as it is and not develop a new version just for appearance’s sake.
Still, a very nice design, don’t you think?
