Three-time Formula 1 world champion and current Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 non-executive Chairman Niki Lauda has said recently that MotoGP racing is more interesting than F1 racing, because of the degree of difficulty.
Naturally, this doesn’t mean that he’d rather watch bikes race against each other than watch Hamilton and Rosberg go at it. It echoes what most people think of modern Formula 1: that it isn’t as spectacular as it should be.
Lauda was quoted as saying that “Racing bikes are very interesting to watch, because you can see how the rider struggles with his bike. In F1 unfortunately the opposite happens: the cars are very easy to drive, they don’t even slide.”
Clearly Niki is thinking back to the days when he used to race and how difficult those cars were to control compared to today’s F1 cars that even Jenson Button thinks are too slow and sensitive.
Perhaps with an increase in mechanical grip, things will change and F1 racing will become more spectacular once again, though it’s hard to believe that teams will intentionally make the cars harder to control.
If you’re already a fan of MotoGP, what Niki Lauda said probably doesn’t surprise you even the slightest.
Watching Lorenzo, Rossi and Marquez race each other this year has been delightful, and it’s also refreshing to watch a motorsport where the machines don’t depend as much on external factors and regulations like in Formula 1.
