Let’s not kid ourselves, the only thing more annoying than a slow, lumbering MPV is watching your favorite TV show without any audio.
Manufacturers such as Ford, Renault and Opel are aware of this fact, which is why their respective S-Max, Espace and Zafira MPVs also come with 200+ horsepower engines, which help all of them reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 9 seconds.
The S-Max is the quickest, with a sprint time of just 8.4 seconds – though it also has 240 HP, more than its two rivals.
Of course, this leaves VW in no man’s land with their Touran, since its fastest version only has 150 HP. It’s no slouch, but come on V-Dub, where’s your racing spirit?
Lucky for us, here we have this rather inspiring rendering of a Touran GTI, which comes with all the ‘GTI’ features, including bigger wheels that look very much at home on this MPV.
The thing is, the MPV segment has evolved quite a bit since the days of the Opel Zafira OPC. Back then, a Hot-MPV was acceptable, and even desirable, whereas now Opel for example has stopped using their OPC branding for their fast Zafira.
Nowadays, MPVs are just quick (those that are, at least), without any OPC, RS, GTI monikers.
Still, if VW would build a Touran GTI, I would actually prefer to see it pack that bi-turbo diesel unit from the Passat. You know, the one that produces 240 PS and 500 Nm (368 lb-ft).
Wouldn’t that be something?
