La Tomatina is a yearly celebration held in Spain and it’s basically just a big tomato throwing free for all deathmatch. This year, though, a Google Street View car was caught in the crossfire and severely damaged by the 30,000 or so participants.
Apparently, it was present in Buñol in order to capture before and after images of the event. But things got out of hand and the happy tomato tossing crowd seems to have turned a bit violent, at least towards the car…
Its body was damaged and the all-important roof-mounted camera sustained terminal damage too – all glass apparently survived intact.
Google had officially announced its intention to record the aftermath of the festival, in an effort to “capture the magic and color that flooded the streets of Buñol during this festival.”
The shots would have been processed and uploaded in a few weeks’ time, but now that plan has been thwarted by the nearly 150 tons of tomatoes used in this year’s edition of the festival which traces its inception some six decades in the past.
