Audi has updated the A8 L Security armored luxury sedan, which now fulfills the criteria of the class VR 9 ballistic protection standard, the most stringent requirements for civilian high-security sedans.
Available to order now with first deliveries scheduled for April 2016, the Audi A8 L Security will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Described as “the most secure Audi ever,” the A8 L Security features an upgraded safety cell that integrates extremely resistant materials – aramide fabric, special aluminum alloys and a hot-formed steel armor that offers even more protection despite its lower weight.
The vehicle’s glazing has also been further developed, with the improvements earning the A8 L Security certification for resistance class VR 9. The luxury sedan has been tested for resistance to explosive charges in accordance with the ERV 2010 guideline. Until now, the A8 L Security fulfilled resistance class VR 7.
The armored sedan is built in a partnership between the Neckarsulm plant and a top-secret factory. Standard security features of the A8 L Security include an armored communication box in the luggage compartment, an intercom for communication with the outside world and selective door unlocking.
Optional security features include a patented emergency exit system, a fire extinguishing system and an emergency fresh air system.
Audi says the A8 L Security is the only luxury sedan with an all-wheel drive system that is offered directly from the manufacturer as an armored high-security vehicle. The automaker also says the sedan can handle a maximum payload of 600kg (1,323lbs), which is the best figure in its class.
Available with two petrol engines, the 429hp (435PS) 4.0-liter V8 TFSI and the 495hp (500PS) 6.0-liter W12, the new Audi A8 L Security can reach a top speed of 210 km/h (130.5 mph).
