If you thought the former Top Gear trio sold their services way too expensive, then you’re not the only one.
As you may recall, Clarkson and his comrades – including the former Top Gear producer Andy Wilman – signed an epic deal with Amazon. Epic as in expensive as it can get.
In fact, everybody knows the price was too ridiculous; even Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon, was recently quoted saying that the deal was… substantial. And that comes from a man worth an estimated $48 billion.
Apparently, Netflix was one of the many companies known to have been in discussions with the presenters, but according to Digital Spy, Netflix’s Chief Product Officer – Neil Hunt – stated that a possible deal with the guys was not worth the money (to Netflix):
“We have past episodes of Top Gear, so we have a pretty good gauge of what audiences like,” Netflix’s Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt told us. Our buying decisions tend to be somewhat data-driven. We have a lot of data to get the deals we want, so there we go. Clearly it wasn’t worth the money to make the deal… I think they sold themselves for way more money [than they’re worth].”
Mind you, with a $250 million check signed by Amazon, the team has about $6.9 million to spend per episode. And yes, that huge amount of cash should make every show an epic petrolhead Nirvana.
