When racing in a straight line, the thought of a previous generation 911 GT2 (997) beating a Corvette C7 Z06 is a little bit ridiculous. In fact on paper, the Vette should cruise to victory every time.
The C7 Z06 is a supercar. It’s got 650 HP and a whooping 881 Nm (650 lb-ft) of torque coming from that 6.2-liter supercharged V8 power unit. You’re in so much trouble when racing against this car, it’s almost funny that somebody thought to challenge it with a 997 Porsche GT2.
It’s not that it would get blown away or anything, but it’s just not possible for a 530 PS, 680 Nm (500 lb-ft) car to get the jump on an opponent with considerably more power and torque and which happens to weigh about the same.
So what happens in the video? Well, as expected the Z06 takes a healthy lead before the driver fumbles with the transmission, allowing the GT2 to get back in the race, which is something that shouldn’t have happened.
What’s really surprising though is that even though the Z06 finds its footing almost immediately, the brief pause was sufficient for the GT2 not just to catch up, but to steadily blow by, and that’s somewhat surprising in this context.
What doesn’t come as a surprise however is the amazing exhaust note coming from that Corvette. It’s enough to strike fear into the hearts of its opponents, as well as to make us fall in love with it all over again.
