Land Rover’s Discovery SUV dominated this year’s Caravan Club’s Towcar awards, winning overall Towcar of the Year, and scored 1st place in the ‘AWD 1,800kg+’ and ‘£50,000+’ categories.
The version in question is the Discovery HSE Luxury, praised by the judges for its “rock solid stability, master-class hill start, and its electric parking brake, which holds really well and releases automatically when pulling away.”
Granted, those types of features aren’t hard to come by in this segment, but the Discovery generally does have well known strong suits.
The Discovery is also available with features such as Trailer Stability Assist, which at speeds of over 37 mph (59 km/h) monitors the trailer and uses selective braking to help correct any problems.
Customers can also get the Towing Assist system, which helps when reversing (especially if you also have the optional Surround Camera System). Towing assist can predict both the vehicle and the trailer’s trajectory, just like a normal reverse system will do for your unattached car.
Land Rover really do seem to be at the top of the “consumer towing game”, especially if we look back at some of their proposed technologies – such as Transparent Trailer and Cargo Sense. These two research concepts help the driver see through the trailed in their rear-view mirror, and provide him with live data during transportation respectively.
Jaguar LR UK Managing Director Jeremy Hicks said that “2015 is proving to be another fantastic year for Discovery. It has been at the top of the judge’s lists of capable towing vehicles consistently for the last nine years. Along with our recent research concept announcements, we are demonstrating our strong ability to develop ground breaking technologies that put the needs of our customers first. Innovation and capability are cornerstones of our DNA and Discovery continues to lead the way in these areas.”
In total, 39 cars were tested at this year’s competition, and other models such as the MG6, VW Touareg, Renault Captur, Skoda Octavia, VW Jetta and VW Passat also walked away victorious in their particular categories.
