A second-generation of Peugeot’s 3008 crossover is under development, with the French carmaker dropping the current model’s semi-MPV looks for a more conventional SUV-like styling, as per the market demands.

Caught by our spies testing in Southern Europe, the heavily camouflaged prototype reveals a long and straight hood, with the front end, as well as some other details, appearing to be inspired by Peugeot’s Quartz Concept from 2014. The car’s profile is less bulbous with shorter overhangs on both ends and a more sloping roofline.

Whether these styling changes will affect the 3008’s roominess remains unknown, but it could grow in size to make up for any losses.

The new 3008 is based on the same front-wheel-drive EMP2 platform that underpins the firm’s 308 hatchback and estate models and will get a similar set of three- and four-cylinder petrol, and four-cylinder diesel engines, with all-wheel drive to likely be offered on the more powerful units.

The current car’s unique Hybrid4 model that uses a two-liter diesel engine in conjunction with an electric motor will not be available on the new 3008, which will get a new petrol engine-based plug-in hybrid variant instead.

Look for the new 3008 at next year’s Paris Motor Show.
