As we’re nearing the four-year anniversary from the launch of the Toyota GT 86 / Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ siblings, their creators are pushing forward a mid-cycle facelift.
We spied Toyota testing a lightly camouflaged GT 86 in Europe, which is the identical twin of the North American Scion FR-S, so the same revisions should apply to both models.
So, what’s different about this prototype over the current edition? The most obvious change is the new front bumper with a much wider and lower air intake flanked by different fog lamps. Our spies also mentioned that the front headlamps looked like they’re incorporating LED units – probably for the daytime running lights.
The same LED technology appears to have been used at the back for the tail lamps that keep their previous shape, while other updates include the re-profiled rear bumper and a slightly larger wing.
Overall, small exterior styling changes, which will likely be joined by interior improvements to renew our interest in the rear-wheel drive sports car.
Of course, the question lingering on everyone’s lips, is whether the facelift will bring additional horses under the hood, to which we can’t answer with certainty – yet. Many rumors about a power boost have been swirling around since the inception of the car, but none of them has ever come to fruition. For informational purposes, the most recent buzz talked about some tweaks to the 2.0-liter boxer unit pushing power from 197hp (200PS) to around 208hp (211PS).
