Some of VW’s coolest concepts were revealed at the Wörthersee Tour earlier this year, with the Golf GTE Sport Concept making one more appearance, this time at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
For those of you who don’t remember, the VW Golf GTE Sport Concept previews a potential future for the iconic Golf GTI, using a plug-in hybrid powertrain for extreme performance purposes.
The body is largely made out of carbon, the aero comes straight from motorsport applications and under the skin there are no less than three motors which provide a combined 400PS (394hp) and 670Nm (494lb ft) of torque to allow the Golf GTE Sport Concept a top speed of 280km/h (173mph) and a 0-100km/h (0-62mph) time of 4.3 seconds.
Not too bad for a car that supposedly can run 50km (31 miles) on electric power only and has a combined NEDC fuel economy of just 2.0l/100km (141mpg UK).
The hybrid powertrain consists of a 299PS (294hp) turbocharged 1.6 TSI petrol engine which comes straight from the Polo R WRC rally car and two 115PS (113hp) electric motors with the power going to all four wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Oh, and the cabin has room only for two, with its architecture clearly inspired by -what else- the racing world.
Too bad we are not going to see a car like this reaching production anytime soon. Come on VW, stop teasing us and build it already!
