Cadillac’s checklist for the 2016 model year brings powertrain upgrades to the ATS and CTS sedans, along with some other minor equipment improvements.
For starters, there’s GM’s new, fourth-generation, 3.6-liter direct-injection V6 that makes 333hp (248 kW) and 285 lb-ft of torque (386 Nm), an increase of 12hp and 7 lb-ft over the outgoing V6 with the same displacement. First announced on the CT6, it’s now available on both the ATS and CTS.
With the help of the Active Fuel Management system that temporarily deactivates two the 3.6L’s cylinders in light-load driving conditions and the latest Stop/Start system, Cadillac says the new V6 enhances fuel economy by up to an estimated 9 percent when compared to the previous engine. Furthermore, Cadillac claims that a new cam drive system contributes to the latest 3.6L unit being 3 dB quieter than the Infiniti 3.7L V6.
The only other change to the engine range is that the 272hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder on both the ATS and CTS gains fuel-saving Stop/Start technology.
On all models, the six-speed automatic is being replaced by the new Hydra-Matic 8L45 eight-speed automatic, which is not only more compact and lighter, weighing approximately 33 pounds (15 kg) less than the previous transmission, but it also helps improve fuel economy by around five percent, thanks to a wider, 7.0:1 overall ratio and numerically lower top gear.
Elsewhere, Cadillac has enhanced the CUE infotainment system adding Apple CarPlay and Androi Auto capability, with both sedans getting three new exterior colors named Cocoa Bronze Metallic, Moonstone Metallic and Stellar Black Metallic.
Additionally, the 2016 CTS features a Surround Vision 360-degree camera system, new 18-inch alloy wheel design, and refreshed interior color and trim combos, while the 2016 ATS gains extra active safety tech.
Note: At the time we posted this article, Cadillac had only released photos of the 2016 CTS, but there are no styling differences between the 2015 and 2016 ATS
