Matthias Böttcher, a transport / industrial designer from Stuttgart is the creator of this stunning fluid sculpture of a Mercedes-Benz concept. His aim was to retain the basic lines of the original 1950s 300SL Gullwing, but also use the latest brand design cues to bring it all together.
It was completed as his bachelor’s thesis at a design university and as is usually the requirement with such final project, he also built a scale model to show off.
In case you haven’t already noticed from the opening shot, the concept, which Matthias calls SL|PURE has no windscreen or side windows. The only transparent bit is in the center of the roof, probably to alleviate the sense of claustrophobia such an interior could have.
We presume that it’s been thought up as a self-driving car of the near future where you no longer need to actually see the road and can rely solely on sensors and cameras to reach your destination and not crash.
It does look a bit weird having absolutely no glass visible from the front, but the design is definitely pretty enough and realistic looking enough to warrant attention.
