As unrealistic as some as these KIA Optima spots can be in terms of realism, if there’s one thing LA Clippers star Blake Griffin knows, is what it’s like to be “in the zone”.
In basketball, the word ‘zone’ refers to two things. First you have the zone defense, which is nothing but a strategy on how to guard opposing players. And then you have what players refer to as The Zone – which is where a highly talented athlete goes (mentally) in order to feel like he can basically do anything while on the court.
It’s where Jordan went to beat Utah in Game 6, it’s where Kobe went to drop 81 points on the Raptors and it’s where Blake Griffin went plenty of times last season, showing incredible athleticism, ball handling, basketball IQ, toughness and accuracy.
So where does the all-new KIA Optima fit in? Well, if you’re a fan then you’d probably like to think that driving an Optima will somehow get you to feel like you’re in the “zone”. But if you’re watching the video as a neutral observer then you’re probably happy to see Blake moving on from thinking that his previous-generation Optima was capable of taking off from an aircraft carrier.
One thing we do appreciate is the fact that Griffin definitely has above average acting skills (for an athlete). He can deliver his lines while matching them with the proper facial expressions and body language, while looking very relaxed.
It’s not something that everybody can do, which is more than we can say about the all-new Optima – not that much of a special car in its segment.
Maybe KIA should think about the Optima starring in a commercial about Blake Griffin and not the other way around.
