Toro Rosso Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz Jr had a miraculous escape during the Russian Grand Prix Free Practice sessions.
After exiting Turn 12 of the Sochi track, at the fastest part of the circuit, the car got out of control and hit the left-hand barrier at around 200 mph (320 km/h).
The Toro Rosso ended under the barrier and there was immediate concern about the well-being of Sainz Jr. The rescue team had a hard time taking him out and immediately transferred him by air ambulance to the hospital. Thankfully, he seems to be okay, with no injuries at all, but he sure must be shaken.
This is the official team statement:
“Following Carlos Sainz’s accident during FP3 today in Sochi, the driver is perfectly conscious and was able to talk to the extrication team. Once out of the car he was taken to the circuit Medical Centre, where he underwent an initial assessment of his condition.
After arriving at the Sochi Hospital 4, Carlos Sainz, who never lost consciousness, underwent a medical examination, including a full body scan. The scan showed that the driver has no injuries.
However, he will be staying in the hospital overnight as a precautionary measure, which is the normal procedure in these circumstances.
We will release further information when it is available.
Thumbs up….Carlos is fine!!!”
Just two weeks ago, Red Bull Racing’s Daniil Kvyat had a very scary accident in Suzuka. He, too, escaped unharmed and even raced the next day!
