McLaren unveiled a new limited edition of the 650S Spider to honour the 50th anniversary of the inaugural Can-Am racing season.
The McLaren 650S Can-Am will be strictly limited to 50 units globally and features many unique touches with the help of McLaren Special Operations (MSO) like the retractable hard top made out of carbon fibre which is a first for McLaren.
The bonnet, airbrake, front splitter, center section of the rear bumper, door blades and the sill covers are all made out of carbon as well, with a set of exclusive lightweight forged alloys inspired by the company’s 1960s racers with gloss-black finish and diamond-cut rims make the 650S Can-Am stand out from its more common siblings.
Further unique details include the louvered carbon front wings which are designed to reduce pressure over the front axle and increase downforce and a new exhaust with quad pipes made from polished stainless steel, said to offer a unique soundtrack.
As for the engine, the twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 carries no changes, still making 650PS (641hp) and 678Nm (500lb ft) of torque, allowing for a zero to 62mph (0-100km/h) in 3 seconds flat and onto a top speed of 204mph (329km/h).
The limited McLaren 650S Can-Am will be offered in three colours, Mars Red like the car in the pictures, Papaya Shark which is a fancier orange shade and Onyx Black. Customers will be able to choose a ‘corresponding’ racing livery to their cars for ‘an even closer visual association with the historic Can-Am series’.
The price for the limited McLaren 650S Can-Am is set at £255,850 for the UK and $334,500 for the US market, with the first deliveries scheduled to commence in the spring of 2016, 50 years on from the first Can-Am race at Mont Tremblant, Canada.
