Juan Manuel Fangio, Ferrari, Mille Migglia: τhe stuff legends are made of.
This car is what automobile and racing culture is all about. In fact, it could very well be the pinnacle of passion, engineering, skill and talent, which kind of makes it a legend. Truth be told, this stunningly beautiful Ferrari 290 MM is one of the many sacred, deep-rooted pillars that cradles the modern motoring culture.
Only four 290 MM units were constructed by Ferrari and bodied by Scaglietti, and all of them are valuable beyond belief. Unlike modern-day supercars, which claim stupendously high prices to justify their performance or social-status, the 290 MM is priceless due to the history and heritage it carries, as Peter Wallman, Car Specialist, RM Sotheby’s explains.
“It’s hard to know where to start when describing just how important this 290 MM is. Driven by the greatest drivers of the 1950s and built for possibly THE greatest driver in history, this is a car with which Enzo Ferrari was personally involved and is a fundamental part of Ferrari folklore. Its originality, coupled with its extraordinary provenance and history, which are truly second to none, can only lead you to conclude that it is one of the most desirable and valuable cars that will ever come to the open market.”
This particular example – chassis 0626 – was specifically built by Ferrari for Juan Manuel Fangio to drive in the 1956 Mille Miglia. To this day, Fangio is considered one of the greatest racing drivers of all time, winning 5 Grand Prix Championships – a performance surpassed only by Michael Schumacher.
Painted in a unique, Argentinian factory-livery for the renowned racing driver, the automobile was offered with a new 3.5-litre V12 mill, capable of developing 320 hp at 7200 rpm and push it to a top speed of 280 km/h.
With Fangio at the wheel, the Ferrari crossed the race of a thousand miles in 4th place, although another 290 MM won the event. Still, the 1956 Mille Miglia was just the beginning of its illustrious racing career, as the machine won numerous other tournaments, including in the 1957 Buenos Aires 1000 km race.
The car will be auctioned-off by RM Sotheby’s on December 10 at the New York Driven By Disruption event.
