There’s no other way to put it – Mitsubishi’s Mirage or Space Star, is the very definition of blandness, and from what we can tell, this facelift isn’t going to do much to change that perception in people’s minds.
Spotted wearing traditional black and white camouflage wraps (probably the only way you’d notice it on the road) in Europe where it’s called Space Star in most countries, the revised version of Mitsubishi’s budget supermini gets a ‘real’ grille in place of the muted opening on the current model.
It’s similar to what its Mexican cousin, the re-badged Dodge Attitude, and the sedan flavored Mirage, named Attrage, get up front.
Other changes we noticed on the outside include a redesigned front bumper, new tail lamp clusters and a re-profiled rear bumper, while the interior, with the exception of some very minor trim details, looks just like the one fitted on the European market models.
Since the European Space Star / Mirage (it uses that name in the UK, for example) and the North American Mirage share the same design with only minor differences here and there like the center console, we’re expecting these cosmetic revisions to be carried it out globally.
In the US, Mitsubishi has said that it will skip the 2016MY and introduce the car for the 2017MY next spring, offering chassis and powertrain updates, while also adding a sedan variant, known in other parts of the world as the aforementioned Dodge Attitude and Mitsubishi Attrage.
It’s no secret that Mitsubishi’s automotive division is going through some very tough times in the Western hemisphere, even going as far as selling off its sole U.S. assembly plant and preparing to kill off the only interesting car in its range, the Lancer EVO. Unless the brand pulls a rabbit out of its hat, this so-called facelift of the Mirage seems like just another nail in the coffin…
