While Red Bull Racing might be forced to leave Formula One altogether, Scuderia Toro Rosso is on track to land a power unit deal for next season with Ferrari. Unfortunately, we’re talking 2015-spec.

It’s the same deal that Ferrari initially offered Red Bull, only to allegedly change their minds, fearing that it would still make them a formidable foe in the title race. That’s an interesting concept, Ferrari fearing Red Bull using their engines from this year.

Of course, Red Bull weren’t thrilled about a 2015 unit either, though as things stand right now, just about any engine would do as the team is being pushed out of the sport.

Toro Rosso however isn’t quite on the same level as Red Bull. While their cars may be fast and even competitive at the front at times, they’re no real Ferrari rivals, which is probably why the “red team” is open to reignite a partnership they held up between 2007 and 2013.

Current talks between the two sides are also about the possibility of running a latest specification unit, though sources say that the 2015 one is more likely.

From a fan’s perspective, even though you certainly don’t want to see any team depart F1, you also don’t want to see them stagnate or take any steps back. This year, Toro Rosso even managed to develop a car that was quicker than the Red Bulls in a straight line (though not overall) – so people would probably want to see how far they can get.

Since their driver line-up is already looking really strong for the future with Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr, the only thing missing is a truly competitive power unit.

What do you guys think, should Toro Rosso settle for 2015-spec Ferrari engines, or hold off for a better deal?
