If you watched the Back to the Future series around its original air date, in the 1980s and early 1990s, the last few weeks have definitely stirred up fond memories.

People all over the world were ecstatic in reaching the date the two movie protagonists traveled through time to, and many discussed the discrepancies between what it suggested would have happened by now and what’s actually here.

The two actors who gave life to Marty McFly and Doc Brown, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd got a lot of attention too. They were featured in a multitude of videos and they even tried to sell you a Toyota.

However, their appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel show, while touching and quite funny (in an oh-so scripted way), also showed the ridiculousness of this entire remembering Back to the Future thing.

A cult classic, sure, but an accurate prediction of the future it certainly never was, even if it was from the fairly recent 1980s. I wonder if we’ll be celebrating the 2006 movie Idiocracy in twenty years’ time – the only problem may be that its ideas are a more chilling and pessimistic depiction of where we’re going in the near future; we probably won’t be celebrating it…
