We’ll never know why the designers of the first-gen Panamera make a splendid sports saloon look so ungainly, or what those who signed it off were thinking at the time.
No matter. Porsche has been taught a lesson and won’t make the same mistake twice. That much is obvious from the test mules that, despite their cladding, reveal a more coherent shape.
In the latest images, the car has lost more of its camo, especially at the rear, which was the worse aspect of the first generation. Now, the slopping roofline and the wide rear arches endow it with a significantly improved look.
The rear lights have the same 3-D design we see in the rest of Porsche’s new models and the only part that the company is trying to hide is the true shape of the C-pillar. Even so, if you take a hard look you can see that under the masking it is similar to that of the 911 in an effort to maintain a visual link with the iconic coupe.
The new Panamera will make its debut soon enough. We bet Porsche has chosen the 2016 Geneva Auto Show, though we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw it two months earlier in Detroit.
