Those looking for a high-performance, high-powered diesel executive automobile, had to turn to the BMW 5-series and the M550d in order to get their speed-thrill. Until now…
This estate BMW started life as an ordinary, fairly-potent 330d, but now it can sprint from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in just 4.9 seconds and all the way to a limited top speed of 296 kmph/184 mph. Why? Because BBM Motorsport fitted the 3-Series Touring with the tri-turbocharged, 3.0-litre mill found on the M550d.
To top it off, the tuner performed extensive software optimizations and mods on the engine, upping its output 440 PS (434 hp) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque, a slight increase over the M550d’s 381 PS (375 hp) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) factory standard, and considerably more than the 245 PS (242 hp) of the 330d.
The story doesn’t end here, as the Bimmer had to be extensively modified to become a capable performer on the road and on the track. So, here’s where BBM’s technical ingenuity comes into play, as the company fitted the car with front and rear axles from the M3 E92.
Moreover, to provide the necessary stopping power, a Stoptech ST60 series braking system with six pistons and 380×35 mm brake discs in front and ST40 with four pistons and 355×32 mm brake discs in rear was instlled, while a KW Clubsport suspension with coilovers and adjustable suspension strut domes, along with Z-Performance 19-inch ZP10 rims wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires, take care of handling.
