We have some fresh news on a set of leaked BMW patent images, purportedly sourced from China. The car pictured in the renders lacks an exhaust pipe and assumptions were made that this will be third member of the “i” family, the so-called i5.
The vehicle’s front fascia is similar to the ones found on the i3 and i8. The whole design may look more like BMW’s version of the Toyota Mirai (the two companies have signed a technology transfer agreement), but its true identity is currently in the “grey” zone.
BMW Blog is quoting alleged sources from Munich, which are stating that the current model won’t be produced, at least not in this form.
“BMW engineers patented a few things. So of course there is some design support, but a production model would not leave the design department like this.”
Reports on the BMW i5 are indicating that it could hit the market by 2020. Whether it will follow the same footsteps as its two brothers or if it will adopt a fuel-cell powertrain is hard to say at the moment.
