Diesel isn’t the juice preferred by many high-end tuners, but BMW’s superb turbocharged, 3-litre, straight six, that runs on the forbidden elixir, beckoned for a proper upgrade.
We don’t often see diesel-powered cars getting love from aftermarket specialists, but we’ve got a feeling that this particular built will quench our thirst for raw power and torque.
Described as a wolf in sheep’s clothing by VOS, this M550d was upgraded to a respectable amount of grunt, which complies with the tuner’s “Vision of Speed” motto. That’s because after a series of engine tweaks, the German company squeezed 450 PS (443 hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque out of the tri-turbocharged, inline-six mill. That’s a significant rise from the 381 PS (375 hp), 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) factory standard.
But bear in mind that it will cost you €2,290 ($2,447) for this kind of upgrade, and the list is not over yet. For instance, for the 8.5×20 and 9.5×20 inches AEZ complete wheel set you’ll have to pay another €2,490 ($2,661), while the high-performance brake system, comprised of Brembo brake disks and four piston calipers mated to high-temperature proof brake pads, will take another €2.695 ($2,878) from your pockets.
Of course, power is nothing without control, and that’s why the tuner is ready to throw in a set of H&R performance springs for €499 ($533). It may seem a little steep, but VOS says these performance upgrades put together will make the M550d one of the fastest diesel –powered cars in the world, since it’s capable of topping 300 kmph (186 mph).
In fact, after all these mods, VOS can proudly cut of the “50d” part from the car’s badge.
