Dragster-loving fans gather around, Chevy just revealed their latest COPO Camaro based on the sixth generation of the model.
Chevrolet was able to reduce the body-in-white mass of the Gen Six COPO Camaro by 133 pounds (60.5kg) and increase the structural rigidity by 28 percent thanks to the lighter and stronger body structure of the new Camaro. The new body also means that the new COPO now offers better aerodynamic performance than the previous car.
As ever, the company will build just 69 of these drag racers for NHRA’s Stock and Super Stock Eliminator classes in 2016, featuring wheelie bars, a parachute, a unique solid rear axle in place of the regular-production’s independent rear axle and a fuel cell with built-in high-pressure fuel pump among others.
The show car was designed with assistance from NHRA Camaro Funny Car Driver Courtney Force, featuring a Red Hot paint job with Courtney’s signature graphics on the exterior. Under the carbon fiber hood there a 350 racing engine with a Whipple 2.9L supercharger on top.
Racers can select from a variety of supercharged and naturally aspirated LS and LT engines based on which class they intend to participate, including a supercharged 5.7-litre, a naturally aspirated 7.0-litre and a new LT-based 6.2-litre engine. All the engines are paired with a racing Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission.
