Hyundai and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) held a special opening ceremony for the Rain Room exhibition last week, the first of Hyundai and LACMA’s decade-long partnership program.

The exhibit is now open to the public, running until March 6, 2016 and is meant to help visitors make an emotional connection with the artwork. The 230 square meter Rain Room installation making its West Coast debut, was created by Random International (a London-based artist collective) and features a continuous downpour of water falling like rain from a 1,500-liter (396 US gal) tank.

Sensors within the room detect visitors as they walk by, and helps them stay dry despite all the rain pouring down around them.

Euisun Chung, Hyundai Vice Chairman said that “At Hyundai Motor, we share LACMA’s vision for innovation as we believe cars are a collage of multifaceted forms of art and technology. Over the next decade, the Art + Technology program at LACMA will continue to surprise people with its groundbreaking experimentation.”

LACMA director Michael Govan added “Random International produces artworks at the intersection of art and technology. This makes Rain Room a perfect fit for LACMA as part of The Hyundai Project at LACMA, which supports exhibitions, acquisitions, and programs at the intersection of Art + Technology. In Rain Room, the artists who are part of the Random International collective have created a wondrous experience, achieved in an environmentally sensitive manner.”

The Rain Room was previously installed at The Curve in London between April 2012 and March 2013, the EXPO 1 at MoMA, New York between May and July 2013 and is also currently set up at the Yuz Museum in Shanghai (September – December 2015).

A part of Hyundai’s global strategy is to continue their support for the art communities, providing creative experiences in all areas across the world.
